Pizza dough mixes, compared

Weighed and blended for you; you add water and time. The middle rung between buying flour and buying dough. A mix sits between flour and ready-made on both price and effort. Our cost calculator prices the whole ladder, delivery included.

A dough mix removes the weighing and the recipe but leaves you the ferment and the stretch. It costs more than flour and less than ready-made dough, and keeps in a cupboard rather than a freezer. Five mixes here run from 70p to £2.00 a ball, and the ingredient list is what separates them: two of the five are three ingredients and nothing else, one is eight with an improver and an emulsifier, and one is the cheapest gluten-free pizza anywhere on this site.

About the ratings on this page. We have not tested these. Where a seller publishes a customer rating we record it per source, with the count and the month checked — never blended, and never used to order the table. Where a maker publishes no product rating we record their company-wide score instead and label it as such — a Trustpilot score measures delivery and service, not whether the food is any good. Counts under about 20 are marked as too thin to judge. We publish nothing of our own until we have bought the product and cooked with it twice; where we have, the row carries our verdict and who wrote it. Our method.

Great Balls of Flour Pizza Dough Mix (opens the seller’s site in a new tab)MX-01 6 dough balls £6.50 £1.08 Dry mix · add water
Ingredients and ratings

Original: Wheat Flour (Calcium, Iron, Niacin, Thiamin), Salt, Dried Yeast.
Sourdough: Wheat Flour (Calcium, Iron, Niacin, Thiamin), Salt, Dried Sourdough Yeast.

Three ingredients and nothing else — no improver, no emulsifier. Sold as a tube in original Neapolitan or sourdough. Proof in six hours or cold-ferment in the fridge. At £1.08 a ball it is barely half the price of the same company’s ready-made dough at £2.00. Their listing also states the mix is "delivered frozen", which reads like copy carried over from the dough; we have asked.

Finding 004 · Mixes

Three ingredients or eight, for the same job.

The Great Balls of Flour mix is flour, salt and yeast. The Gozney mix adds pregelatinized wheat flour, deactivated yeast and ascorbic acid as a flour improver, with an emulsifier in the yeast sachet — eight declared components against three.

Both make a dough ball you prove yourself. One costs £1.08 a ball, the other £2.00. The pattern across this whole site holds here too: the more the product does for you, the longer the declaration gets.

Still to add. Supermarket bread-and-pizza mixes and gluten-free mixes belong on this table — Ocado and Tesco both block automated reading of their search pages, so those need checking by hand rather than guessing. If you know of a mix we have missed, tell us and we will price it.

Common questions about pizza dough mixes

Is a pizza dough mix worth it compared with flour?

It sits between the two on price and effort. The five mixes here run from 70p to £2.00 a ball, against about 30p for flour, water and yeast bought separately and £1.20 upwards for ready-made dough. You are paying for the yeast being measured for you and for a cupboard shelf life instead of a freezer. If you already keep yeast in, the saving over flour is small; if you do not, a mix removes the one ingredient most people do not have.

What is actually in a pizza dough mix?

It varies far more than the shelf suggests. Two of the mixes here are three ingredients and nothing else — flour, salt, dried yeast. One is eight ingredients including an improver and an emulsifier. Neither is unsafe and both make a pizza, but they are not the same product, and only the declaration tells you which one you are buying. Every mix on this page has its full declaration quoted above.
